The cities of the Moon

Oil on thick paper, 30 x 30 cm, 2016.

A map is an imprint, a sign of man in the landscape. An alien intelligence, observing our cities from the great distances of space, could interpret them as the characters of an alphabet, sort of messages, a code of signs, each one different from the other, each with its own meaning and its own syntax. This hypothetical alien presence may not even realize that these cities have a purpose and a function, which are the product of the way we have adapted to live on this planet, but it could engage in an attempt to interpret this unknown language, identifying the alphabet and associating to each character a precise meaning. Will we still be able to understand and share these new meanings, or will they have lost any sense for us?

The infinite city

Oil on thick paper, 35 x 63 cm, 2021.

In the contemporary metropolis one can often get the impression that there is no end, edge, limit or border. The city seems to extend in all directions to the horizon, often with monotony and apparent alienating repetitions. However, for those who live in it, the infinite city is not only a source of stress and frustration, but it is often an exciting jungle, a continuous challenge full of possibilities and unpredictable opportunities. In the infinite city we become small and the fear of being crushed can be great, but despite this it irresistibly attracts us, like a siren call.

Blast

BLAST 1 AND 2. Oil on thick paper, 44 x 44 cm, 2020.

Some concentric circles are superimposed over a very simple geometric pattern that resembles a city map, recalling the idea of an explosion. From the intersection of the two overlapped geometries, decorative forms are born, and somehow they dampen that suggestion of violence and destruction. The explosion thus is crystallized, becoming one with the surrounding elements and sharing their fragility.

In the museum of criminology in Turin are kept the drawings made by people who were once imprisoned in mental hospitals. Often in these drawings appears a chilling pattern made of geometries and symmetries, a sort of cage or prison made of dense colored lines, arranged strictly within a rigid structure of compositional rules. It is as if those people were not only locked up against their will, but perceived in their head and their thoughts another prison, another cage, and with these drawings were able to represent it, with a dense overwhelming decoration. The affinity of these works with Buddhist mandalas is curious. In one case we associate these works with the idea of meditation and stillness, in the other we are dealing with a mirror of anguish and despair. But the border between the two worlds seems to be fragile.

Tetris number 1

An original piece from the series “Tetris”, oil and pencil on paper, 32 x 40 cm, 2010.

In the popular video game Tetris, pieces of various shapes slowly come down from above. The aim of the game is to be able to stick them in as they fall, avoiding the creation of voids. The making of a line devoid of interruptions will allow the disappearance of all the elements that compose it and the continuation of the game. But little by little the pieces accumulate, the thinking time is reduced and the stress increases, until a final piece arrives to occupy the space available above, and the game ends. In these drawings, block after block, row after row, something slowly accumulates and at the end fills the entire space. A horizontal bar at the top of the sheet indicates that the game is over.

This original painting is available for sale at the price of 360 US$, shipping included. Contact me in case you are interested in more information about my work, the sales prices of individual works, or the availability for work on graphics.
