Little red fish

 

I open my eyes underwater. The contours of objects are blurred. The contrast between the colors is softened by a veil that makes everything more uniform. The refraction of the light is influenced by the ripples in the surface of the sea. Flashes of light dance on things, concentrating and dispersing, giving the surface of the objects it stands on the impression of velvet. The fish move slowly among the seaweed, all things appear together, faded and dissolved into one another.

The Milk Way from a different point of view

When we consider a road map or a map of the territory we note that they contain different information that are represented by different means, according to the purpose for which they were created: each time we find colors, symbols and words that recall a precise meaning. What happens if I take these techniques of representation, these symbols, and take off the scope for which they were created and mingle them with each other? Will it be for the reader a text in a foreign language, that is meaningless, or through the world of associations and references that each of us possesses, will generate a new language and associate to those images a new meaning? In these paintings, in particular, I am interested in contours that highlight the points of the territory which are at the same elevation. In my works, they become the borders of different colors or shades, bringing out hidden shapes and concentric curves.

I like to create imaginary worlds. I invent virtual simplified realities, probably the result of travel memories and past experiences. I choose the types of buildings, I place them on a fictitious ground, check the colors of the various parts, the lights, the elements of the landscape. And then I choose a point of view and portray this place of fantasy. The traditional landscape painting has to deal with the atmospheric variables, with the mutability of natural light. Here, on the contrary, not only everything is static, but I can change the various elements at will: add or remove pieces, move something, try the effects of shadows depending on the movement of the lights. But it is a small difference, and also the difference between "real" reality and virtual reality is now small: it has become part of our daily lives, changed our way of perceiving, and somehow has itself become real.

Tetris number 5

In the popular video game Tetris, pieces of various shapes slowly come down from above. The aim of the game is to be able to stick them in as they fall, avoiding the creation of voids. The making of a line devoid of interruptions will allow the disappearance of all the elements that compose it and the continuation of the game. But little by little the pieces accumulate, the thinking time is reduced and the stress increases, until a final piece arrives to occupy the space available above, and the game ends. In these drawings, block after block, row after row, something slowly accumulates and at the end fills the entire space. A horizontal bar at the top of the sheet indicates that the game is over.
