Bridesmaid moth

From the series “Please do not kill butterflies”, pins and oil on paper mounted on a wood panel, 28 x 25 cm, 2016. Original sold.

Please, all these dead animals ... Of course, not every one of us can or want to become vegetarian. Sure, in some cases, maybe, the medical experimentation needs them to get results. But we really have to kill them for our frivolous activities? ... Is it necessary to have so many pink pigs die in front of a camera? Do we really need to dissect sharks in formaldehyde, to starve stray dogs tied to a chain in the corner of a gallery, or to make innocent ants go crazy in twisted tubes of plexiglas? To make these drawings, no butterfly was killed.

Memories of Malta

"Memories of Malta". Oil on thick paper, 50 x 37 cm, 2016. ORIGINAL SOLD.

In this series of paintings I try to blend together the architectural and monumental elements of a place or a city. It’s a bit like recalling to memory a journey made in the past: it will produce many confused and overlapping images. The title of the series wants to reclaim the idea of a fluid memory, moved like water, and confused like a mirage.

From the series “Small things”. Oil, pencil and charcoal on paper, 30 x 30 cm, 2012.

My house is full of little things. An infinity of unnecessary items accumulated over the years, that stay there, without a reason and without a purpose. Sometimes I do not even remember where they come from, where I bought them, or who has donated them to me. But now they have achieved a small space, a place above a cabinet, inside a drawer, on a library shelf, or hidden at the bottom of a closet, and they defend that place fiercely, stubbornly. They don’t want to leave, claiming their right to survive, pretending that I feel an affection for them, a bond that simply doesn’t exist. I avenge with these portraits, which reveal their uselessness, their fragility, and the ability that I could, if I really would, to get rid of them all, forever. I want to show their true face, which is inconsistent. They are an empty and weak shell, so that their own shadow is heavier than themselves.

About a boy

An original piece from the series “Imaginary portraits”, oil on canvas, 30 x 40 cm, 2011.

A series of very simple small works, almost trivial: each drawing depicts a face and an expression.
Is it possible to create a catalog of all the expressions of the human face? Is it possible to classify all the attitudes that our face can take and give a name to each one? No, obviously, because the expressions are endless, as well as the possible variations in the human physiognomy, so that a certain attitude, worn by different faces, can assume from time to time different meanings. It 'a game in which the variables are too many to govern, a sort of indeterminate equation. But then, what sense can have a job like that? Indeed, it could be interesting to investigate why, who portrays the faces, has chosen these, among all the possible infinite combinations. There are some recurring elements? The expressions are mostly happy, or sad and pensive? The eyes are directed towards the observer, or are they absent, facing something hidden? Eventually, this collection of chromosomes will not be able to describe a kind of genetic code, but it will be something very close to the genetic code of the artist.

This original painting is available for sale at the price of 430 US$ (shipping included). Contact me in case you are interested in more information about my work, the sales prices of individual works, or the availability for work on graphics.

“Tetris number 6”, oil and pencil on paper, 32 x 40 cm, 2010. ORIGINAL SOLD.

In the popular video game Tetris, pieces of various shapes slowly come down from above. The aim of the game is to be able to stick them in as they fall, avoiding the creation of voids. The making of a line devoid of interruptions will allow the disappearance of all the elements that compose it and the continuation of the game. But little by little the pieces accumulate, the thinking time is reduced and the stress increases, until a final piece arrives to occupy the space available above, and the game ends. In these drawings, block after block, row after row, something slowly accumulates and at the end fills the entire space. A horizontal bar at the top of the sheet indicates that the game is over.

A virtual model

From the series “Virtual model”, oil on paper, 40 x 40 cm, 2019.

I like to create imaginary worlds. Using the modeling software I invent virtual simplified realities, probably the result of travel memories and past experiences. I choose the types of buildings, I place them on a fictitious ground, check the colors to the various parts, the lights, the elements of the landscape. And then I choose a point of view and portray this place of fantasy. The traditional landscape painting has to deal with the atmospheric variables, with the mutability of natural light. Here, on the contrary, not only everything is static, but I can change the various elements at will: add or remove pieces, move something, try the effects of shadows depending on the movement of the lights. But it is a small difference, and also the difference between "real" reality and virtual reality is now small: it has become part of our daily lives, changed our way of perceiving, and somehow has itself become real.

Ida in the fields

I haven't known my grandmother, but from my mother's stories I imagine she was a very strong and courageous woman. My mother was born during the war, my grandfather was a soldier at the front, and that woman had to look after her newborn daughter, to herself, to the house, in a poor and devastated country, inventing a thousand jobs and expedients. She succeeded, they survived, but the price of this experience was a very tough character. In the pictures of that time my grandmother never seems happy, she never smiles. And my mother, who is now an old woman, still suffers from the thought of a mother who was perfect in everything but who rarely had the possibility of a motion of affection for her. This painting is a small tribute to that woman that I never met, and a reward (unfortunately useless), trying to give her, at least in the imagination, that thoughtless day that maybe she never had.

Oil on canvas, 80 x 120 cm, 2019.
