Reliefs

(original sold)

From the series “Reliefs”, oil, ink and pencil on paper, 66 x 20 cm, 2006.

When we consider a road map or a map of the territory we note that they contain different information that are represented by different means, according to the purpose for which they were created: each time we find colors, symbols and words that recall a precise meaning. What happens if I take these techniques of representation, these symbols, and take off the scope for which they were created and mingle them with each other? Will it be for the reader a text in a foreign language, that is meaningless, or through the world of associations and references that each of us possesses, will generate a new language and associate to those images a new meaning?  In these paintings, in particular, I am interested in contours that highlight the points of the territory which are at the same elevation. In my works, they become the borders of different colors or shades, bringing out hidden shapes and concentric curves.

Virtual model

This painting presents an aerial view of a stylized village nestled within undulating green hills. With bold, geometric precision and vivid color contrasts, the landscape is transformed into an abstract yet familiar world. The red-roofed buildings, with sharp, angular forms, seem to float amid the rhythmically curving terrain lines that suggest elevation and movement. The layout evokes medieval European hill towns. A serene blue stream at the bottom adds a gentle visual anchor, hinting at the lifeblood of the village. The work’s combination of cartographic abstraction and vibrant storytelling draws the viewer into a miniature world that feels timeless, both playful and profound. Oil on thick paper, 30 x 50 cm, 2023.

Diagram number 8

An original piece from the series “Diagram”, oil on thick paper, 50 x 30 cm, 2023.

In my youth at the school, certain lessons were inevitably boring. When the distraction peered, inadvertently I began to scribble the pages of the books, filling with drawings their blank borders. The hour of history, or philosophy, gave easy ideas: I copied the portraits of philosophers illustrating the beginning of each chapter in the textbook. The math class gave beautiful diagrams: their geometries structured the space, providing backgrounds to fill with decorations, figures, pictures. Maybe it was the insight that those same geometries hid a sort of aesthetics, an inexplicable and axiomatic beauty, like when we are aware of it in front of nature, without being able to give it an explanation. This sort of drawings make me think of a kind of prayer, a repetitive but pleasant action, like the work of an embroiderer, like a spider weaving its web.
